Applications 

The instrument has been designed for quick identification of ground connection in overhead high voltage line system. The operation is based on the principle of the fact that on ground connection in compensated high voltage networks occurrence of current higher harmonic components takes place, especially of the current 5th harmonic. The measurement is made with no interruption of the network´s operation and from the ground, completely without a contact.

Description

The instruments indicates the magnetic field 5th harmonic level in two planes perpendicular to each other. Under normal conditions (no ground connection), this level lis ow and it corresponds to the current harmonic distortion in a network. On ground connection, the current 5th harmonic component is created, which closes through the spurious capacitance line-ground and through the spot of the ground connection. The 5th harmonic level is significantly increased. Further, in the point of ground connection, the electromagnetic field homogenity decreases. The level in vertical direction is significantly increased there. Past the connection location, the level in the parallel direction is lower than before the location. This way, the place of ground connection can be pinpointed.

The time required for identifying a ground connection depends on the network type, on the number of measuring instruments employed to locate the fault and on the method of communication between them (radio) and on suitable choice of the measurement points (easily accessible places, forks in the line). If proceeding systematically, a step-by-step localization goes on very quickly and exactly so you can even locate a faulty insulator on a post, for example. You can further measure overhead lines with cable sections.

The instrument features three LED measuring scales and two pushbuttons. It is powered from a 9-volt battery.
