SIMON Z Print
SIMON ZLoad Simulator

5 or 10 kW load simulator which in conjunction with any SIMON device allows to simulate and analyze the effect of additional load connection to the voltage level at a certain mains nodal point.

Description

The Load Simulator SIMON-Z is an additional device for SIMON-line mains monitors. Together with a SIMON-line monitor it allows testing the effect of additional 10kW (or 5kW) load connection on voltage level in the mains network junction under investigation.

The device can be applied to find out about a possibility and effect of electric heating or other heavy-load appliances connection in residential, office, or industrial spaces. Regarding its case small dimensions it is suitable for on-site operation measurements.

In practice, it is often necessary to solve the task based on judging a possibility of a new appliance connection and its effect on the most weighty quality indicator of the drawn power, e.i. voltage. For such purposes a mains operation calculation is still employed where power distribution network data (length, cross section area, etc.) and further customer data based on a long-time period drawn power is used as the input information, possibly supplemented with operation measurement data. This method is very time-demanding and burdened by considerable inaccuracies. For that reason a subjective assessment method of an appliance connection effect, which is based on the knowledge of local conditions in the network, is used in overwhelming variety of cases.

These problems can easily be solved using a SIMON-Z Load Simulator together with a SIMON-line Mains Monitor. The measurement method principle lies in carrying out two measurements, when one takes the real voltage at the given network point and the other repeats the measurement with a connected Load Simulator of a nominal power input 10kW (5kW). The Load Simulator is connected for only half-a-cycle time (10ms) at that procedure and the measurement takes place during the same period.

Real load of 10kW (45A) has been chosen for purposes of evaluating the power distribution network as optimum. It is possible to use a Load Simulator of 5kW (23A) power input as an alternative for weak mains, for instance with a 6A circuit breaker or extremely loaded lines.

The measurement result by the mentioned way and device is two voltage waveforms over time, where one waveform represents a voltage values behavior detected at the consumption point without additional load and the other a voltage values behavior at the moment of the load connection. The difference is a voltage drop caused by the load connection. Evaluating the ratio between desired consumption value and tested consumption you can determine whether the voltage conditions will remain within the limit boundaries given by technical regulations, or whether it is not possible to permit the new consumption because of the limits exceeding.
